Fellow deputies and members of the community remembered with a heavy heart the life of Harris County Sheriff Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwa Friday, reported KHOU.
Dhaliwa was fatally shot in the back after making a traffic stop near Houston.
“He was a hero. Deputy Dhaliwal was a trailblazer,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said after the shooting to the NY Post.
“I’m heartbroken because he’s a personal friend of mine,” Gonzalez told KHOU. “He’s very respected.”
Dhaliwa is the father of three children.
The first Sikh officer in the department is fondly being remembered by those he touched as someone who would drop off toys to children and a man committed to his job and the community.
