New York’s Commission on Human Rights passed a 29-page directive that fines those who use the term “illegal alien” up to $250,000. According to the Daily Mail, this legislation protects both immigrants and non-immigrants.
“Harassment and discrimination based on one’s actual or perceived immigration status, national origin, limited English proficiency, or accent will never be tolerated in our city of 3.2 million immigrants,” said Bitta Mostofi, the commissioner of the immigrant affairs office.
According to an opinion piece by the Washington Examiner, the law is being challenged as a violation of the first amendment which protects freedom of speech.
Politicians like Ted Cruz are resisting the law and insist that the term “illegal alien” is the official term used under federal law.
Yet, city officials will take severe measures against violations of this law. The law protects anyone feeling discriminated in public places like restaurants, fitness clubs, stores, parks and schools.
