Champion Asian American gymnast Sunisa Lee misidentified by AP and hometown paper as from China

A photo caption from the Associated Press and published in her hometown paper, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, misidentified gymnast Sunisa Lee as being from China.

Lee who won a gold medal with Team USA at the World Championships last weekend was born in St. Paul, MN.

The Pioneer Press and AP corrected the error after being called out by HmongAmerican.org on its Facebook page.

Pioneer Press and Associated Press (AP) Sunisa Lee is a member of Team USA and is an American citizen. Please correct this embarrassment on your website,” the group said.

HmongAmerican.org says both organizations issued an immediate correction.

The 16 year old dazzled at the World Championships in Germany. She tied for second on the floor exercise with teammate Jade Carey and scored third highest on the uneven bars, according to USA Today.
