An 18-year old Colorado girl is suffering from brain damage unable to speak, walk, eat or take care of herself four months after going into cardiac arrest during breast augmentation surgery.
KDVT TV reports the family of Emmalyn Nguyen this week filed a lawsuit against Dr. Geoffrey Kim and Nurse Anesthetist Rex Meeker.
“I just want to find out the truth, what happened and prevent this from happening to other people,” her father Sonny Nguyen told Fox 31.
The lawsuit claims Emmalyn went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing and went unobserved for 15 minutes. She never regained consciousness, but 911 was not called for 5 1/2 hours.
“I’m a little speechless about how they can wait that long. I’m a little shocked they wait that long for help,” her dad told CBS4.
According to the station this is the second time Meeker has been sued. In 2009, one of his patients died after also suffered brain damage during breast surgery. The lawsuit was settled out of court.
“They killed my mom, 100%,” said Brandy Swenson to CBS4. “She would be alive today if they had done their jobs right.”

RE: Teen left in coma-like state after brain surgery: That’s astonishing Meeker was allowed to work and not stripped of his license and banned from his job the first time. Criminal. Who is responsible for that? The AMA? I know from working in a hospital they protect each other when things like this happen, even not telling families what really happened.
RE: Teen left in coma-like state after breast surgery: So young and already having cosmetic surgery.
