The family has announced the death of 89-year-old Yik Oi Huang whose brutal beating at a San Francisco playground nearly one year ago sparked both fear and outrage.
Grandma Huang, as she is affectionately known, suffered massive injuries to the head, spine, hands and ribs when she was attacked during her routine morning exercise at Visitacion Valley Playground on January 8.
“With a heavy heart, we are here to inform you that Guandma Huang Yik Oi (a.k.a. Huang Popo) has passed away today, 1/3/2020, at 4:45pm at Laguna Honda Hospital,” the family wrote on a Go Fund Me page. ” She suffered through the massive pain and had been clinging for her life courageously.”
Police announced the arrest of Keonte Gathron two weeks after the attack. Authorities believe he beat Huang, then entered her home across the street from the playground. Police took him into custody after another robbery.
Despite the arrest, authorities are still asking people with more information about this case to come forward.
The death coincides with a pre-planned Healing through Compassion & Solidarity Silent Sit-In on 1/8/2020 from 7:30am – 10am. The event which had been intended to mark the one year anniversary of the beating will now be a memorial to Huang. It will be held at Visitacion Playground.
The family is asking for contributions to help cover the costs of the funeral. As of this morning, nearly $6,000 had been raised out of a $50,000 goal.
