Despite winning a Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy, voters with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences failed to honor Awkwafina for The Farewell with even a nomination.
This is the second year the Golden Globe Awards recognized an Asian American actress who the Oscars ignored. Although she did not win, Constance Wu last year won a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy for Crazy Rich Asians, but like Awkwafina, AMPAS voters completely shunned her.
Voting for the Golden Globe Awards is conducted by the Foreign Press Association.
Awkwafina’s snub completely set off the Twitter universe.
Awkwafina starred in The Farewell as Billi, a granddaughter who reluctantly joins the rest of the family in keeping a terminal diagnosis from her grandmother. Instead she comes to visit grandma in China and participates in a ruse of gathering for a “fake wedding” as an excuse for a party and family reunion.
John Cho (Star Trek) and Issa Rae (Insecure) announced the 2020 Oscar nominations. The awards will be presented Sunday, February 9 on ABC.
