On Tuesday morning, Piers Morgan mocked Chinese people while discussing Peter Philip’s Jersey milk ad on Good Morning Britain, Metro reports.
According to the South China Morning Post, Morgan was discussing an ad which had already sparked controversy in the UK. Philip’s, the son of Princess Anne and grandson of the Queen, appeared in a commercial for Royal Milk. The ad was produced by a Chinese food group called Bright Food Group.
While discussing the ad, Morgan began making noises to mimic the language.
“I don’t know the Chinese for ‘I only drink… What’s it called? Ching chang cho jo,'” Morgan said, according to Metro.
His co-host Susanna Reid tried to protest.
“Taking the mickey out of other languages is pretty 1970s,” Reid said.
“Surely you can take the mickey out of it! He’s using ching chang chong milk from the Chinese state – that’s what they said in the advert,” Morgan insisted.
“No, they’re speaking Chinese,” Susanna protested.
Good Morning Britain viewers were furious with Morgan. The show received 297 OfCom complaints in 24 hours.
Morgan defended himself by insisting he was mocking Philips and not Chinese people.
Still, many are calling for the host to be fired. Many viewers were also frustrated by Susana Reid’s response, insisting that gently chiding Morgan was not enough.
