Last night, during his State of the Union address, President Trump gave Rush Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Limbaugh has been repeatedly criticized for his racist and hateful comments on his radio show “The Rush Limbaugh Show.”
According to Vox, Limbaugh has made fun of “pretty much anyone who is not white, straight, and male” on his show. Limbaugh was part of the birther movement, a movement that falsely claimed President Obama was not born in the United States.
Limbaugh has also mocked Asians on his show. In 2011, he mocked a speech given by the President of China, Hu Jintao. According to The Huffington Post, Limbaugh was listening to the president’s speech on Fox News. He said he couldn’t understand the speech because there weren’t any translators or subtitles.
“Hu Jintao was just going, ‘Ching cha. Ching chang cho chow. Cha chow. Ching cho. Chi ba ba ba. Kwo kwa kwa kee,” Limbaugh said.
Limbaugh has made racist remarks about Chinese people this year. According to USA Today, Limbaugh said in his January 27 show that the coronavirus comes from the ChiComs, a slur used to reference the Chinese government. The title of that day’s show was “Is Our Government Doing Anything to Stop the ChiCom Virus?”
Many Americans were not pleased that Limbaugh received the medal of freedom.
