An Asian American student in Los Angeles who was sent to the nurses office after coughing is blaming unwarranted concern about the coronavirus.
Former Los Angeles news anchor Leyna Nguyen shared what happened to her son to the media.
“He actually said to me, ‘all the other students who are coughing, they don’t get sent out.’ But they’re not Asian,” said Nguyen to Fox 11.
The coughing incident happened after her son swallowed some water and it apparently went down the wrong pipe.
The nurse cleared Dylan Muriano to return to class. Muriano said when he questioned his teacher about what happened, he ignored him.
“I asked him if he sent me out because I was Asian and he responded with nothing,” Muriano said to Newsweek. “He looked me in the eye and didn’t say anything after that. Just left me alone and wouldn’t say anything.”
The next day the same teach sent Muriano to the dean’s office for being disruptive.
Nguyen tried to turn the incident into a teaching moment.
“We talked about it, I explained the sensitivity and ignorance and told him all through life he will work with and for people who won’t like him or judge him unfairly but he needs to keep his head down, do his work and finish strong,”

RE: Asian American student sent out of class for coughing. Blames coronavirus hysteria: What? People are dying of the flu here in America. That is just as serious. That teacher is full of stupidity. Good for mom explaining the reality.
RE: Asian American student sent out of class for coughing. Blames coronavirus hysteria: Here’s a podcast released 2/14/2020 where I address the anti-Asian racism and xenophobia related to #COVID19 epidemic & travel bans/restrictions and quarantines in the US: https://bit.ly/3bwRIJU. Good general factual information in the whole podcast (it is about 23 minutes long, commentary shared by me with 2 other podcasters), with my specific comments re: anti-Asian bigotry and racism approximately 14:45 through approximately 19:20.
