Numerous publications are reporting that the four-time Oscar winning film from South Korea, Parasite, could be coming to cable television.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , HBO is in negotiations for the rights.
Collider is reporting that Mark Ruffalo who plays Bruce Banner in several Marvel movies is in consideration for one of the leads.
If true, this would continue a trend of American adaptations of South Korean hits which minimize the Asian-influence of the originals.
Chinese American poet and writer Grace Wing-Yuan Toy expressed concern on social media writing “Wouldn’t the Right, “woke” thing be to Not want to be part of this as a white man, let Asian and Asian Americans try out for all of the parts?! Aiyah!”
Asian Social Net joined in trying to head off the casting decision before any is made.
@HBO Please do NOT #whitewash something Asians hold very dear. We do want to see more Asian & Asian American faces on screen.
Of course, all this in premature; given Hollywood’s history, better to speak up now than later after the cast has been named.
