Chinese American WWII Veterans will have to wait a bit longer for their Congressional gold medal.
A ceremony to award them the prestigious honor scheduled for late April has been postponed due to the coronavirus, the Chinese American WWII Recognition project announced today.
“It is with regret and disappointment to inform you that, in concurrence with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highly anticipated 2020 Congressional Gold Medal Ceremonies scheduled from April 27-30 must be postponed due to the evolving effects of COVID-19.
“From the outset, the attention to the care, welfare and comfort of our veterans has been the primary objective. That this viral disease can place our most vulnerable group in jeopardy only serves to also magnify the Speaker’s priority in the decision made about this history once-in-a-lifetime event,” the announcement stated.
Activities were planned over several days in the nation’s capital. The cancellation will be a hardship to some, but of course the safety of everyone involved and the containment of the virus is the priority.
No new date has been scheduled as of yet.
“Though this disappointment is temporary, we ask that our focus continue to be on doing our part to mitigate and contain this coronavirus outbreak by personally adopting best practices for personal hygiene, maintaining safe social distance, and seek trusted medical information and advice. If you know of someone who is among our most vulnerable group, please give serious thought to check up on them. They may feel even more isolation during this time,” the announcement went on to say.
