Donald Trump is being heavily criticized for his exchange with CBS reporter Weijia Jiang at a press briefing on Monday. One of his campaign lawyers, Jenna Ellis, has taken to social media to defend him, according to Daily Mail.
At the press briefing, Jiang questioned why Trump continued to claim that the United States was doing much better than other countries in terms of coronavirus testing.
“Why does that matter?” Jiang asked, according to The Guardian. “Why is this a global competition when, every day, Americans are still losing their lives?”
“They’re losing their lives everywhere in the world,” Trump said. “And maybe that’s a question you should ask China. Don’t ask me, ask China that question, OK?”
Jiang asked Trump why he specifically directed
Ellis, who is a legal adviser for Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign, took to Twitter to defend him. She noted that Trump has given over 50 press briefings where he has had to deal with “POC liberal women” asking him “stupid questions.”
“POC liberal women have been present at every one of them and asked stupid questions,” Ellis wrote in her tweet. “Sometimes for HOURS.”
POC is a term that most commonly used to refer to people of color.
Ellis also defended Trump on Facebook, calling Jiang an idiot, MEAWW reports.
“Asian American reporter: ‘Why are you saying that to me, specifically?'” Ellis wrote. “Um, because YOU asked the question. Idiot.”
At the press briefing CNN reporter Kaitlin Collins and PBS reporter Yamiche Alcindor both attempted to help Jiang continue questioning Trump about his “ask China” comment. Jiang thanked Collins and Alcindor on Twitter.
