A Korean UBC student is bringing attention to rising anti-Asian sentiments after she was beaten and robbed on a bus on Friday, reported CTV News.
The incident occurred after the 24-year-old student confronted a group of four teens for drinking and vaping on the bus. The teens began beating the student before taking her backpack and exiting the bus.
The student noted that none of the other passengers on the bus stepped in to help her, expressing concerns that her race may have been a motivating a factor.
“Every time I kind of think about recalling the situation I think someone can help me and I even thought, ‘What if I am a White girl? Would it be better?’” she said.
The four teens involved were arrested shortly after the attack and have been released from police custody, according to CBC.
Metro Vancouver Transit Police spokesman Michael Yake stated in an email that “charges will be recommended” and “there is nothing to indicate that the alleged assault is racially-motivated.”
