Five-time Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian announced on Instagram that he and his wife Hallie are expecting their first child.
The post featured the couple lovingly staring into each other eyes while holding a baby-sized teddy bear t-shirt. Balloons tied with a string and adorned with the words “Girl, Boy” separated by a question mark floated off to the side.
“Big news! Baby Adrian coming February of 2021! #futuregirldad #cantwait” read the caption.
According to Team USA, the couple met at a dinner party in Adrian’s home and became engaged in 2017. Adrian competed with the Cal Swim team and Hallie went to school at Stanford where she was on the diving team.
Adrian’s mother Cecilia is from Hong Kong and is of Chinese descent.
Adrian had hoped to compete in his fourth Olympic games in 2020, but COVID took care of that. He now has his eyes set on the rescheduled 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, hoping to win his sixth gold medal and continue a streak of having won a gold medal in four straight Olympic games.
Adrian had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in January, 2019 shortly after marrying Hallie. He made his comeback five months later to compete in the Pan Am Games, reported NBC.
“It’s a good feeling,” Adrian said back then on the Olympic Channel. “It’s tough to describe, right? This is home for me. Honestly, I’ve never been to Bloomington, but this environment. … That’s what feels right.”
He went on to win gold at the World Championships in South Korea, according to ESPN.
“That was just a really beautiful, nice reminder, not only to me but to others out there that maybe getting an injury, get sick right before the meet or whatever, that you really can’t count yourself out for any reason,” he told the Cable sports network. “There’s a reason why you play the game, right? So that was an important lesson for me to relearn, because I’ve learned it several times over my career. You kind of go into every race or every opportunity that you have to compete with a fresh slate, right? The score is 0-0, and you have to do what you need to do to compete for gold medals.”
