Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) has won his re-election bid in Illinois. The Congressman declared his victory in Illinois’ 8th district on Tuesday night.
Krishnamoorthi won with 71.1 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times. Votes are still being counted, but Krishnamoorthi’s win is secure.
Tuesday night’s victory means that Krishnamoorthi will sworn in for his third term.
The 47-year-old won his first 8th district Congressional race in 2016, replacing Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) after she successfully won her Senate bid. He became Illisnois’ first Indian American Congressperson, according to NBC News.
Krishnamoorthi was born and raised in Illinois. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and his law degree from Harvard University. Before he became a Congressman, he served as the state’s deputy treasurer, special assistant attorney general and chairperson of the audit committee of the Illinois Housing Development Authority.
The Congressman secured the endorsement of all major Chicago-area newspapers during his campaign.
“I am honored that my constituents have elected me to represent them in Congress for another two years, and I am tremendously grateful to all my supporters who helped make my re-election possible,” Krishnamoorthi said in a statement. “Today, our country faces enormous and unprecedented economic and public health challenges. No matter who controls the White House or the Senate in January, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to bring the country together to implement common-sense solutions that move our country and our people forward.”
