Misleading video circulates in Indian American community

A video of a protest in 2018 is circulating on social media as a demonstration held in 2020 in support of Indian farmers.

Two separate fact checks conducted by AFP India and the Indian Logic say the video is being used to discredit the farmers’ protest.

AFP India believes the video actually shows Sikh protesters in 2018 in San Francisco advocating for an independent homeland. In the video, they can be heard chanting anti-India and anti-Hindus slogans.

The video has been seen tens of thousands of times under the heading “Do you think this is a farmers’ agitation? Long live Khalistan… this is the reality behind the farmers’ agitation.”

Last week Indian Americans in at least six states protested in support of farmers in India agitated over new laws they fear will make it difficult for them to get a good price for their crops.

Indian Logic reports the video falsely represented as part of the protests last week actually came from an annual San Francisco protest to draw attention to the mistreatment of Sikhs and other religious minorities.
