Xiao Zhen Xie, the 75-year-old woman who fought off a white man attacking her in San Francisco, is donating the nearly $1 million raised for her back to her community, NPR reports.
Last Wednesday, Xie used a large stick to fight off a white man who had punched her in the face. A video of Xie asking her attacker why he hit her went viral on social media.
The incident left both parties with injuries that were treated at a local hospital. Xie sustained two black eyes. One eye bled uncontrollably long after the attack, according to SFIST.
Xie’s grandson John Chen set up a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to help his grandmother recover. The initial campaign sought $50,000 to help cover medical expenses. It has since raised around $947,000.
Chen posted an update to the GoFundMe page on March 22 stating that his grandmother was feeling much better. He said Xie asked that the money raised be given back to the Asian community to help fight anti-Asian racism.
“She said we must not summit to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary,” Chen wrote in the update.
