A new elementary school in Fort Bend County, Texas will be named after Indian American Sonal Bhuchar, The Times of India reports. The Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) made the unanimous decision to name elementary school 53, which will be established in January 2023, after Bhuchar, who was described as a “trailblazer.”
Bhuchar died at the age of 58 in 2019 due to cancer complications. She was originally born in Mumbai, India before immigrating to Houston in 1984. During her life, she was very active in her community, working towards bettering the county’s education system. She was elected to the FBISD Board of Trustees for six years and served as the Board President for two.
As a trustee, she led various district initiatives and programs to improve student life and provide greater scholarship opportunities. She also committed herself to volunteer work through her work at various organizations and nonprofits with focuses ranging from children’s needs to literacy to healthcare.
For many current board members, she was an inspiration. “The first year she was my mentor, and I came to know her very well,” Trustee Jim Rice said, according to The Times of India. “She was a lady who worked very hard in our community to help build bridges of understanding between our very diverse community.”
Dr. Subodh Bhuchar, her husband, was touched by the honor to his wife. “The current Fort Bend citizens and FBISD Board of Trustees recognized Sonal’s phenomenal service to the county by unanimously voting for an elementary school in her honor so that her legacy in education and philanthropy continues for generations to come,” he said.
