Student group at Illinois High School accused of racism

Members of the Asian American community are condemning as racist a poster used to recruit students to join a conservative group at Glenbrook South High School in Illinois.

The poster included a hammer and sickle associated with Russia along with a character from the video game “among us” and the caption “China kinda sus.”

“Sus” is slang for suspicious.

“The clear intent was to stoke xenophobic anti-Asian (sentiment),” said State Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, who is the grandchild of Chinese immigrants, to Journal and Topics.

According to the Daily Herald, the character is described as “an alien imposter.”

The Assistant Principal for Student Activities approved the poster.

Gong who has a child who attends the high school met with Superintendent Dr. Charles Johns expressing concerns. Gong say Johns promised to apologize to “students and families harmed by this content” and to conduct training to fight anti-Asian hate.

A petition demanding an apology has generated 1700 signatures.
