New Jersey’s governor announced Tuesday that Attorney General Gurbir Grewal has turned in his resignation.
The nation’s first Sikh American to hold the office of Attorney General is stepping down to accept a position as the head of enforcement in the Security and Exchange Commission, reports ABC7.
“I’m excited to get to work with the talented team of public servants to uncover and prosecute misconduct and protect investors,” Grewal said in a statement to NBC NY. “I thank Governor Murphy for the opportunity to serve the people of New Jersey and all of the colleagues with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work during my career in the state.”
According to the New Jersey Globe, Governor Phil Murphy will appoint an interim successor to serve out the remainder of the term until the November election. Greway has clashed with Murphy over the last 18 months and Greway was not expected to serve a second term.
“The Enforcement Division has a critical role to play in finding and punishing violations of the law,” said Grewal. “I’m excited to get to work with the talented team of public servants to uncover and prosecute misconduct and protect investors. I thank Governor Murphy for the opportunity to serve the people of New Jersey and all of the colleagues with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work during my career in the state.”
