Police in New York are calling the attack on an Asian American mother and son which left her in critical condition with head injuries a “random attack,” and not a “hate crime.”
Authorities tell AsAmNews the suspect on Saturday grabbed the 22-year-old son’s backpack as he walked up the stairs from the Canal Street subway station in Chinatown with his mother.
The robber’s action sent both the son and his mother tumbling down the stairs.
Police say no racial slurs were exchanged.
Emergency crews rushed the 58-year-old woman to an area hospital where she underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition.
Police Sunday morning released surveillance video of the suspect exiting the station.
