A mountie seen on video dragging a student down the hallway during a wellness check is now facing assault charges, reports CBC.
Last year, Mona Wang’s boyfriend became concerned and requested a wellness check for his girlfriend in the British Columbia city of Kelowna.
Authorities say Const. Lacy Browning found Wang semi-conscious. The boyfriend accused Browning of being abusive towards her and used more force than necessary.
A lawsuit filed by Wang has been settled out of court.
“I settled to move on with my life,” said Wang to Global News. “Despite this, I expect the justice system to do what is right by taking steps to ensure that Lacy Browning is not allowed to continue acting as an RCMP member. She is a disgrace to the RCMP with a history of assaulting vulnerable people, and she will not stop,” she said.
According to the Surrey News-Leader, Browning’s first court appearance on the charge is set for Sept 14.
Browning says she used no more force that was reasonable and necessary. She said she struck Wang with an open palm to subdue and arrest her which she says is allowed under the Mental Health Act.
She also says Wang began yelling and swinging her arms at her.
