Memorial tonight for police officer killed while on duty

A memorial service will be held tonight for an Indian American police officer killed in a head on collision as he drove to assist in fighting a California wildfire.

Officer Harminder Grewal served in the Galt Police Department for more than two years.

India West reports Grewal died Thursday, August 26, just days after a car struck his vehicle head on as he drove to assist in the fighting of the Caldor Fire in Northern California.

“It’s hard. Our department is heavily supported by our community,” said Galt Mayor Shawn Farmer to CBS13.

“We kind of have a personal relationship and we wave to them when we drive by, we see them, and they talk to us. We love them and we support them totally,” said Galt resident Jeff Silack.

California Governor Gavin Newsom joined in mourning the loss of Grewal.

“Jennifer and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Grewal, a devoted public servant who worked selflessly to protect his community. Our thoughts are also with the fellow officer who was seriously injured and is recovering,” Gov. Newsom said.

Grewal is survived by his parents, Gurdip and Jaswinder Grewal; his brother and sister-in-law Jasdeep and Kirandeep Grewal; and sister Nandeep Sidhu. He was just 27-years old.

A young boy recently ran a mile in Grewal’s honor to memorialize the officer. He posted his heart-felt run on Facebook.
