A video of MMA fighter Khai Wu defending a boba shop from a customer’s racist comments has gone viral. Wu said on Twitter that the incident took place on Halloween night in Tracy, California.
In the video, a customer can be heard criticizing the boba place for not selling sushi. The customer appears to be intoxicated.
Wu appears and calmly addresses the man.
“I heard what you said. You said he can’t speak English,” Wu says in the video.
Wu explains to the customer that he has been eating at the boba place for five years and they have never sold sushi. He also reminds the man to not be racist
“If the man’s talking to you and he has his mask on and you can’t understand him, don’t tell him that he’s Asian and you can’t understand what he’s saying because he doesn’t speak English. He speaks perfect English,” Wu says.
The man tells Wu that he strongly disagrees that Wu and the store worker can speak perfect English. Wu asks the man to step outside so they can talk.
Wu said on Twitter that he was compelled to step in once he heard the man make a racist remark. He was concerned because of the rising number of hate crimes against Asians.
He also clarified that he blurred the man because the situation wasn’t “a cancel him type thing.” He said the man left the shop shortly after Wu asked him to step outside to talk.
“I understand people make mistakes or sometimes say things without understanding how it may hurt or affect others. I blurred navy blue guy out because this isn’t a cancel him type thing,” Wu wrote on Twitter.
