President Joe Biden today temporarily transfer presidential powers to Kamala Harris today while he undergoes a colonoscopy, reports CNN.
It’s the first time in the history of the nation a woman has acted as President.
It’s common for Vice Presidents to be granted presidential authority while the President is under anesthesia. Vice President Dick Chaney assumed the role several times when President George W Bush also underwent colonoscopies.
“The Vice President will work from the office in the West Wing during this time,” said press secretary Jen Psaki, according to CNBC.
CNBC reports Biden’s motorcade arrived at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center before 9 a.m. Eastern.
According to Yahoo News, the transfer of power began at 10:10 and ended at 11:35 when the president came out of anesthesia.
The White House notified both Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the president pro-tempore, and Rep Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Speaker of the House, about the changeover.
Biden turns 79 on Saturday and he is the oldest President to take office.
