Riz Ahmed and Lulu Wang are teaming up to produce a new comedy series called “The Son of Good Fortune,” Variety reports.
Variety learned exclusively that Ahmed’s production company Left-Handed Films and Wang’s Local Time will partner to create the series at Amazon.
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Lysley Tenorio. It was published in July 2020 and has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
“The Son of Good Fortune” is a coming-of-age story focusing on an undocumented Filipino teenager living in the Bay Area. He is faced with the task of paying off a large debt and maintaining a relationship with his mother, who is a former action movie star.
Wang is the director of The Farewell, a film that was nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.
Ahmed is a well-respected actor known for his work in The Night Of and Sound of Metal. He has been nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy. “The Son of Good Fortune” will be the first project for his production company.
Ahmed and Wang will serve as executive producers alongside Allie More (Left Handed) and Dani Melia (Local Time). Andrew Lopez, a Filipino and Korean writer/director will adapt the novel into a script.
Wang tweeted that it was “an absolute dream to collaborate with this team of talents.”
It is unclear when the series will begin production.
