A mother who allegedly screamed at her daughter during a game in Southern California to punch an opposing player is now facing misdemeanor charges.
Yahoo Sports reports Latira Shonty Hunt, 44, faces one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and another charging her with misdemeanor battery.
As AsAmNews previously reported last month, the daughter sucker-punched 15-year old Lauryn Ham after the two collided on the court.
“It is unconscionable that a parent would encourage her child to engage in violence during a sporting event,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement to CBSLA. “Youth sports are invaluable in teaching our children discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship. But a win at all costs mentality that is completely devoid of fair play, respect, and civility is disgusting.”
The father of the girl who threw the punch is former NBA player Corey Benjamin. He was not at the game in Garden Grove, but apologized to the victim’s family after the much publicized incident.
A lawyer for Benjamin’s family told NBC News we look forward to seeing the evidence and will address the charges accordingly.”
The mother of Ham who was punched says her daughter suffered a concussion.
