Sandra Oh and Awkwafina to star in sister comedy

Following a competitive bidding war, 20th Century Studios has won the rights to a new comedy starring Sandra Oh and Awkwafina as sisters.

According to the exclusive report on Deadline, the estranged sisters are forced to reunite in an attempt to come up with the money needed to pay off their mother’s gambling debt.

The two hatch a plot to go cross country in an attempt to turn Awkwafina into a Jeopardy champion and win the needed money.

Jessica Yu has been tapped to direct. She earned an Emmy nomination for directing an episode of Fosse/Verdon, an eight-part series on FX in 2019.

Netflix originally had the rights to the comedy but relinquished those rights. Several studios then moved quickly to make bids.

20th Century reportedly has made the developing this project a priority.

Awkwafina’s star rises with every new project. Her latest, Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, topped $400 million in the global box office. She also stars in Nora from Queens on Comedy Central and had a featured role in The Farewell which won her a Golden Globe for best actress.

Oh currently stars in Netflix’ The Chair and is in the 4th season of Killing Eve. She remains a favorite of fans of the long-running show, Grey’s Anatomy, even though she left the show many years ago.
