Closure has finally come for the family of Xin Rong, a pilot and doctoral student who crashed his small plane in Canada in 2017.
MLive reports bones found in 2018 have been identified as that of Rong.
Originally, forensic experts labeled the bones as likely belonging to a White or Hispanic man. They believed the deceased died of blunt forced trauma. More recent tests indicated they more likely belonged to someone who was Asian or Inuit. Finally, dental records identified the bones as Rong.
“There were all kinds of theories going around at first,” said Saginaw County Undersheriff Mike Gomez to ABC12.
Rong attended the University of Michigan and had rented a Cessna. The plane crashed with no fuel and no one on board. The police and family suspected he had jumped out of the plane to his death.
“He had made comments to other people, he had made comments to his wife that was his intent,” says Gomez.
According to MLive, a property owner discovered the partially clothed bones by monitoring trail cameras.
Rong’s family in San Francisco has been notified.
