Memorial Held for FilAm Student killed in Charity Boxing Match

On Sunday, funeral services took place for Nathan Valencia, the University of Nevada Las Vegas student who died following a fraternity charity boxing match, KTNV reports.

The services included a special Sunday Mass, where Father Jose Unlayao spoke about the impact the 20-year-old has had even after death.

Valencia died after he was injured in an amateur charity boxing match. He had never boxed before. His death has prompted Nevada State Athletic Commission to change its rules, KTNV reports.

The commission had been previously unable to regulate the match because it fell under university exemptions. After Valencia’s death, an emergency resolution was passed to create NSAC oversight of university-related combat sports, KTNV reports.

At the memorial, friends and family talked about Valencia’s positive energy.

“His character, his charisma, his positive attitude and his smile that lit up every room will be missed,” said frat brother Benjamin Elharrar, according to 8NewsNow.
