Democratic Congress member Andy Kim has condemned Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s use of the racial slur “yellow,” The American Independent Foundation reports.
Greene used the slur during “AmericaFest,” a political rally hosted by youth conservative group Turning Point USA. She was attempting to describe the diversity of the crowd at “AmericaFest.”
Rep. Kim, who represents the third congressional district of New Jersey, has been outspoken about racism against Asian Americans. In a March interview with NPR, he spoke about experiencing discrimination at the State Department because of his ethnicity.
Now, Rep. Kim is speaking out against his colleague’s use of a racist slur against Asians.
“I pray that in the year 2021, people know not to use derogatory language when referring to AAPIs [Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders],” Kim said in a statement to The American Independent Foundation. “We must get better at this. I urge my colleague to come talk to me and I’ll explain why this rhetoric is hurtful and should not be used.”
Greene has yet to respond to criticism she has received for using the slur.
