The first of three suspects accused of brutally beating a 30-year-old Asian American man with a stick back in October has been arrested.
Police in New York on Friday announced the arrest of 18-year old Jordan McNamara, reports Pix11. Investigators say he along with two other men attacked the victim with closed fists and wooden sticks, leaving him with head injuries.
Authorities are also still trying to identify one of the suspects seen on the left in the photo below the headline and in the tweet below.
As AsAmNews previously reported, the suspects allegedly said “What are you doing here, Asian?” during the assault.
According to the New York Daily News, prosecutors have not charged McNamara with a hate crime.
Two women were with the three suspects during the attack. It is not clear what role if any they played in the incident.
The Daily News reports that last year police in New York investigated a total of 118 hate crimes against Asians. That’s a surge of 321 percent compared to the 28 reported in 2020.
