Hamtramck, a city in Michigan, has officially sworn-in the nation’s first all-Muslim city council, Ann Arbor News reports.
Hamtramck is a city of roughly 28,400 residents located in Wayne County. Earlier this month, the city swore in its first Muslim immigrant mayor Amer Ghalib.
All six city council members are Muslim, five of the six are Arab immigrants, People Magazine reports.
Ghalib called the city’s all-Muslim council an “historic achievement” but said it would not have an impact on how the council governed.
“There is no difference, because we are all bound by the city regulations and the country’s constitution, with laws and regulations that we cannot violate,” he said in the interview with Arab News. “All religions promote virtue and our noble Islam promotes doing good and abandoning evil and respecting others and treating them well.”
