On Friday afternoon, Barbie announced that it partnered with Guo Pei to create a special Lunar New Year doll.
Guo, who is China’s first and only officially recognize couturier, is known for her lavish and imaginative creations. She is most known for dressing Rihanna at the 2015 MET Gala, and had her creations featured at Singapore’s Asian Civilizations Museum during Summer 2019.
On its Instagram, Barbie shared, “For many Asian communities around the world, Lunar New Year festivities bring an occasion to honor one’s heritage and wish for good fortune in the year to come.”
The doll itself will wear a red dress akin to a cheongsam or an ao dai. Stitched with unique golden phoenix details representing grace and a water motif for wealth and resilience, Guo Pei’s handiwork is meant to celebrate cultural symbolism and authenticity for this holiday season.
The partnership was facilitated by the Asian Couture Federation. Products are available for purchase on January 24.

More like a kwa, not the same shape as a cheongsam or ao dai
