Tongan Olympic icon Pita Taufatofua honored at Beijing games

Tongan Pita Taufatofua didn’t make it to the Beijing Olympics, but another competitor channeled the shirtless sensation Friday at the opening ceremonies.

Nathan Crumpton, the flag bearer of America Samoa, greased up his body and marched into National Stadium, ala Taufatofua.

You’ll recall the Tongan twice went viral when he went shirtless at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and also in Rio in 2016.

“Today is the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games,” Taufatofua wrote on his Facebook page. “Although I won’t be there, I will be cheering on all athletes’ and my fellow teammates who have arrived in Beijing.”

According to NBC Bay Area, Crumpton’s father worked for the American Foreign Service in Kenya where Nathan was born. He eventually lived in Virginia during his high school years and graduated from Princeton.

He won America Samoa’s first gold medal in a winter sport, skeleton, at North America’s Cup in 2019.
