The first issue of DC Comics’ newest Asian American superhero Monkey King is out to coincide with the 2022 Lunar New Year.
Drawing inspiration from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, Monkey King follows Marcus Sun, or the Monkey King, through his Gotham City High School experience. It features Sun developing into a superhero and learning more about his heritage.
NextShark noted that the miniseries will also detail Sun’s relationship with his father Sun Wukong, a character derived from the original Journey to the West. Additionally, Monkey King will include an encounter between Sun and Batman.
Other Journey to the West characters make an appearance in this comic, including Sun Wukong, King Bull Demon, Princess Iron Fan, Red Boy, and Erlang Sheng. These characters will assist Sun in the defense of the heavenly realm against the antagonist Darkseid and his parademons, the DC Comics’ website added.
The 12-issue series was written by Gene Luen Yang, known for Superman Smashes the Klan and American Born Chinese, with art from Teen Titans’ Bernard Chang, stated Screenrant.
A sneak peek of the Monkey Prince No. 1’s ten-page prologue is contained in Monkey Prince No. 0 available for free on DC Universe Infinite, according to NextShark.
