Actor Darren Criss wrote a three-page letter sharing the “colossal shock” of losing his brother Chuck at the young age of 36.
The Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe winner posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram.
“We will never know how long he was fighting the war within himself, but last week it consumed him fully, and he succumbed by taking his own life.”
Criss acknowledged that he himself struggled about how much he wanted to share publicly but decided that illuminating the situation would be best for everyone.
“It’s crushing to say now that Chuck clearly has a severe depression that was only worsened by a lifelong struggle he had with expressing his feelings.”
Criss described the last several years for his brother “as increasingly difficult for Chuck” and that he hit “an unfortunate rough patch in his life.”
The 35-year-old actor emphasized that “there is absolutely no shame in feeling shame” and nothing wrong in seeking help. He called “seeking professional counseling and support is a wonderful way to help you see just how abundantly love is available to you.”
He said while Chuck’s mental wellness took him, it does not define him. He will remember his brother as “vibrant, special, worldly, hilarious, insightful, gifted, intelligent, celebrated and adored.”
