Seniors Fight Back hosted a free self-defense workshop on Mar. 5 in Westminster, CA.
Seniors Fight Back was founded in April 2021 in response to the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, according to their website. This initiative is designed for AAPI seniors 50+ and their loved ones.
“We all have grandparents, and a lot of them are independent still. They take the bus, and they go to the store,” said Tony Dang, the founder of the organization in an ABC7 article. “It could have easily been my grandparents,” he said talking about the many elderly victims of hate crimes.
The article added that many attendees of Saturday’s workshop said they had never learned self-defense techniques before.
In addition, the workshop also equips elders with self-defense knowledge and resources, according to the website.
Previous workshops have taken place in Artesia, San Gabriel, Los Angeles, and Hawthrone, California.
Dang noted the group will host more self-defense classes in the future, reports ABC7.
“Each senior is someone’s grandparent, parent, brother, sister, friend, or loved one,” the website writes.
