A jury in Bakersfield, CA Wednesday convicted a 67-year-old-man for killing his daughter-in-law supposedly after she insulted him.
KGET reports Jagjit Singh learned through a Punjabi interpreter that he faces a life term in prison.
Court documents obtained by KGET indicate police believe Singh shot Sumandeep Kaur Kooner in 2019 because she was having an affair and “sully his honor.”
True Crime Daily reports Singh confronted Kooner and she reportedly threatened to rip off his beard, a sign of disrespect in the Sikh culture.
“Singh stated he determined at that time his only choice was to commit an honor killing of his daughter-in-law for her indiscretions and disrespectful behavior,” stated court documents cited by Bakersfield Now.
Authorites said Singh shot Kooner three times.
