A man accused of beating a 62-year-old woman over the head with a rock faces murder charges.
WINS1010 reports that a grand jury in Queens indicted Elisaul Perez, 33, on murder and manslaughter charges Monday.
It happened in front of her home back in November as she assisted her landlord in sweeping the sidewalk.
Guiying Ma went into a coma and died three months later in February.
QNS.com reports surveillance video shows a man identified by authorities as Perez striking Ma with a chunk of concrete.
“The entire community has been mourning over the brutal attack that took the life of GuiYing Ma, who immigrated to this country in hopes of being able to provide for her family,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said to QNS. “We are committed to remaining vigilant at every stage of a case to help ensure justice for victims and family members.”
The Flushing Post reports that several community leaders including Rep Grace Meng (D-NY), Assembly Member Ed Braunstein, State Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, former Councilmember Peter Koo and then Council Member-elect Sandra Ung spoke denouncing anti-Asian hate at a rally prompted by this incident.
However, no hate crime charges have been filed.
