BTS, one of the world’s best-selling bands, joined President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss the rise of anti-Asian hate and anti-Asian hate crimes.
Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre introduced the K-Pop band.
“Wow, so much excitement. I know it’s the Fed chair meeting,” she joked as BTS entered the press briefing room.
Each member of BTS gave short statements on anti-Asian hate with the help of an interpreter.
“We were devastated by the recent surge in hate crimes, including Asian American hate crimes,” Jimin said. “To put a stop to this and support the cause we’d like to take this opportunity to voice ourselves once again.”
Suga encouraged people to embrace their differences.
“It’s not wrong to be different,” BTS member Suga said through an interpreter. “Maybe equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences”.
The band said they are hopeful things are moving in the right direction.
“We hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and everyone as a valuable person,” bandmember V, said.
