A former Massachusetts State Senator says a grand jury indictment accusing him of stealing a gun from an elderly woman is politically motivated.
Dean Tran (R-MA) is running for Congress to unseat Democrat Rep Lori Trahan (D-MA).
‘This is simply an act of my opponent Trahan calling in political favors to smear my name and distract our communities from voting for a real leader who will serve them and their interests,’ he told DailyMail.com in a statement.
The indictment handed down last week accuses Tran of intimidating a widow in 2019 into giving him the firearm of her late husband and made her sign a contract, the Boston Herald reported. He is accused of demanding the key to the gun safe and stealing a Colt .45.
That gun was eventually returned.
“To this date, I am not aware nor have I received any notification or paperwork relating to the said indictment. This is proof of the political stunt that it really is,” Tran said.
An announcement by Attorney General Maury Healey, a democrat, says otherwise. Healy says Tran faces six counts in total ranging from one count of larceny of a firearm to misleading a police investigation and larceny of a person over 60.
Tran served in the state legislature from 2017 to 2021. The Senate Ethics Committee in 2020 stripped him of his leadership positions after it concluded he used his tax payer funded Senate staff to work on his campaign, according to Commonwealth Magazine.
