Former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today he’s dropping out of the race for the 10th Congressional district in New York.

Assemblyman Yuh-Line Niou remains in strong contention for the seat, with recent polls indicating she is one of the top candidates.

“It’s clear to me that when it comes to this Congressional district, people are looking for another option, and I respect that” he said on Twitter this morning.

He says he will find a different way to serve the city.

De Blasio’s decision comes after several polls show him near the bottom of the race in a crowded field of 13 candidates.

A poll released July 14 from the firm Data for Progress show Niou polling second with 14% support from likely voters. That’s behind New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera who has 17% of likely voters saying they’ll vote for her.

Attorney and former White House impeachment attorney Dan Goldman sits in third with 12% support.

De Blasio sits in seventh place for 5%.

The district which had been redrawn includes parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The executive director of Data for Progress said yesterday before DeBlasio made his announcement that the race remains undecided.

“There’s a lot more public communications to be happening, but I think there’s a clear set of front-runners … Carlina, Yuh-Line, Goldman, all have credible paths there,” he said to the Intelligencer.

The race is set for August 23.

A recent Working Families Party poll had Rivera and Niou tied for the lead with 16 percent. Goldman had 10 percent and Mondaire Jones 8.

Voters elected Niou to the 16th Assembly District in 2016, representing Chinatown, the Lower East Side, the Financial District, Battery Park City and lower Manhattan neighborhoods.

She once served as Chief of Staff of New York Assemblymember Ron Kim.
