Burberry is being celebrated for its inclusivity as its newest children’s collection features its first ever Sikh child model, The Quint reports.
4-year-old Sahib Singh is highlighted in the luxury brand’s iconic fashion, while wearing a patka, Vogue India reports. The patka is often worn by Sikh boys and is the predecessor to the pagri, worn by Sikh men, according to Vogue India.
Burberry’s casting choice received positive encouragement from the South Asian community, The Quint reports.
We applaud @burberry for featuring a #Sikh kid model,” United Sikhs, a United Nations affiliated organization, said via Twitter. “International brands should own the responsibility for promoting diversity, inclusivity & wider representation of minority communities.”
Singh’s parents also expressed excitement through their son’s Instagram account, according to The Quint.
“Modeling may not be Sahib’s career and that’s fine… They know they don’t have to stick to traditions and the sky is the limit,” they said via Instagram.
Singh’s participation in the Burberry ad campaign also serves as inspiration to others in the Sikh community, Singh’s mother, Harjot Kaur said, according to Vogue India.
“To see our son, who does look different from his peers, being given a chance by the iconic British brand was truly a milestone moment,” Kaur said, Vogue India reports. “We want, not just Sahib but all the boys in our community, to be proud of their heritage and wear their patkas and paghs with pride and confidence.”
