The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that it had elected Janet Yang as the Academy’s president. She is the first Asian American ever to hold the position, Variety reports.
Yang is a member of the Academy’s Producers Branch and served as a vice president of the board and chair of the Membership Committee. According to The Wrap, Yang will replace casting director David Rubin as president, who served three four-year terms. She was elected by 54 board members during a virtual meeting.
According to Deadline, Yang has produced several notable films including The Joy Luck Club, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Zero Effect, Shanghai Calling and the Oscar-nominated animated feature Over the Moon.
“Janet is a tremendously dedicated and strategic leader who has an incredible record of service at the Academy,” said Bill Kramer, Academy CEO, according to Variety. “I am thrilled that she is taking on the esteemed role of Academy President and look forward to working closely with her on our shared vision to serve our membership, celebrate the collaborative arts and sciences of motion pictures, and inspire the next generation of filmmakers.”
