Tyler Buchner, the Asian American starting quarterback for the University of Notre Dame, will miss most of the season with a sprained shoulder.
According to CBS Sports, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman announced Monday that Buchner has a sprained AC joint that will require surgery. He will miss at least four months, which means he will likely be out for the season.
The Fighting Irish were stunned Saturday after their loss to Marshall. Buchner completed 18 of his 32 attempted passes and threw two interceptions. His injury is yet another setback for the team.
Drew Pyne will be the new starting quarterback. Pyne and Buchner were in a close competition during pre-season for the starting spot, with the latter ultimately winning out. Steve Angeli will be the backup quarterback.
Freeman told ESPN he does not anticipate that the passing game will change much with Pyne replacing Buchner. He did say, however, that the team will miss Buchner’s speed.
Despite his injury, Freeman hopes Buchner will continue to be heavily involved with the team by helping Pyne and Angeli on the sidelines.
“That’s going to be [Buchner’s] role now, you got to become a coach,” Freeman said, according to ESPN. “You got to somehow make our team better, even though you’re not going to be playing.”
