Critics are not loving Netflix’s newest comedy series “Blockbuster.”
The show follows Timmy Yoon, played by Randall Park, who is the manager at the last Blockbuster store on earth. Timmy and his staff struggle to help the store stay relevant.
The show has a 21 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Many critics feel that the show, like Blockbuster, is stuck in the past. Proma Khosla, a TV writer for IndieWire, felt that “Blockbuster” did not properly engage with social media for a show that is set in 2022.
“Authenticity in media matters, and the clear lack of it when “Blockbuster” engages with social media weakens the show,” Khosla wrote in her review.
Megan Garber, a staff writer for The Atlantic, felt the characters on the show did not act their age.
“The world’s last Blockbuster is staffed by young people who often act like adults and older people who often act like children—by people who are caught in a moment when the old bargains and timelines are fading away,” Garber wrote in her review.
“These characters, like the anachronism where they spend their days, suggest the trappings of suspended animation. They try to move forward; their tape keeps rewinding,” she continued.
Reviewers are loving Randall Park’s performance despite the show’s poor set-up.

It was almost painful to watch. Was hopeful. But the characters were shallow and the acting poor. Too bad. Turned it off after giving it 15 mins. Including 10 mins grace period.
Randall Park would be better cast as Willis Wu in Hulu’s “Interior Chinatown.”
