U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA) posted a picture of himself with a bag of popcorn outside of his office on Tuesday as he prepared for the Speaker of the House vote.
“About to go to the House Floor,” Lieu said in a tweet, which showed him holding a bag of popcorn.
Many believe that Lieu was jokingly preparing to watch the chaos unfold as the House voted for a new Speaker.
Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi has officially stepped down as Speaker of the House. Now that Republicans have control of the House, the speaker will be chosen from their party.
On Tuesday, House members voted to decide whether Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) should be the next Speaker. He lost three rounds of voting with a faction of Republican Congressmembers refusing to back him, NBC News reports. He has since lost a fifth round of voting on Wednesday.
It appears that Lieu’s possible reference to a dramatic Speaker of the House vote was correct. Many people were amused by his tweet.
Others thought the photo was in poor taste.
