The Post and Courier has confirmed former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley will announce her candidacy for president in a couple of weeks.
It will be the third consecutive time an Indian American has run for president. Former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ran unsuccessfully in 2016 for the GOP nomination, California Senator Kamala Harris ran in 2020 and eventually became Joe Biden’s running mate and now Haley in 2024.
Haley served as President Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations and had earlier vowed not to run against her former boss who was the first to declare he is running for president in 2024. However, most recently she has called for a “new generation of leadership.”
Invites are expected to go out soon for Haley’s announcement Feb. 15 at the The Shed at the Charleston Visitor Center.
“We have lost the last seven out of eight popular votes for president,” Haley said during a recent appearance on Fox News, according to NPR. “It is time we get a Republican in there that can lead and that can win a general election.”
Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants. She spent six years as governor of South Carolina before joining the Trump administration. Politico reports she has already been traveling to early-voting states with her PAC Stand for America.
