Tanya Woo to run for Seattle City Council

Tanya Woo, a community advocate, has announced that she is running for the Seattle City Council’s District 2 seat, KOMO News reports.

The district includes Rainier Beach, Beacon Hill, Chinatown International District, SODO and Georgetown, KING 5 reports. Woo grew up in Beacon Hill and currently lives in Rainier Beach. Her family also owns a hotel in the Chinatown International District and used to own a bakery in the area.

“My job was to give little kids my age cookies so I would have access to this big tray of cookies, and I would hand it out to other kids,” Woo told KOMO News.

During the pandemic, Woo watched as South Seattle suffered. She currently runs the Chinatown International District Community Watch, a group that focuses on community-based safety policies. Woo wants to help the area recover from what she calls “bad city policies.”

“I’ve seen how South Seattle has changed and I’ve seen what happens to neighborhoods that don’t have a voice,” Woo said in a release, according to KING 5 “When we are expected to live with bad city policies. I want to change that and that’s why I’m running for Seattle City Council.”
